A message from Elaine Wells, Founding President
Bay St. George South Historical Society, Incorporated 2012
Located in St. George’s Bay on the southwest coast of Newfoundland & Labrador, our region includes the communities of: Heatherton, Robinsons, Cartyville, McKay’s, Jeffreys, St. David’s, Maidstone, Winterhouse, St. Fintan’s, Loch Leven, and Highlands.
Early settlers arrived in this area to find a richness of resources from both the land and the sea; and many residents still make their living this way. Agriculture, fishing, and various forestry related industries shaped the origins of this beautiful bay; some of the aspects we hope to explore and preserve. We will also delve into other features of our history such as: education, religion, the role of the railway, sport fishing/hunting, and the many personal stories of all those who came before us.
We have received a Heritage Designation for one of the oldest homesteads in Cartyville, and our goal is to restore this house and surrounding grounds as a featured attraction. This will be an ongoing project, and you can follow this page for developments. Our other tangible plan is the operation of a museum to showcase the vast amount of archival material that exists in our communities. A great deal of genealogical research on the residents, past and present, has already been carried out and recorded, and we hope to assist and expand on this. Some of our current residents can trace their ancestry in this area back to the early to mid-1700’s.
Our historical society is another example of the dedication and service of the volunteers in our community, just like many who settled in this place and made it home. So let's all go forward...to the past!
Sincerely,
Elaine Wells
